In my view, leadership is epitomized by leading through personal example, championing the principles of teamwork and solidarity. True leadership transcends mere authority; it entails the ability to inspire and effect positive change for the betterment of all involved.

Thank you so much for joining us in this interview series! Before we dive into the main focus of our interview, our readers would love to “get to know you” a bit better. Can you tell us a bit about your childhood backstory?
Certainly, my upbringing was marked by a complex tapestry of memories, including both joyful moments and challenging experiences. Within my family dynamic, I encountered difficulties in expressing and receiving love, stemming from a lack of affection from my mother and instances of physical abuse witnessed with my father. However, amidst these challenges, my grandparents emerged as steadfast sources of love and support, providing me with a sense of security and warmth during my formative years.
When you were younger, was there a book that you read that inspired you to take action or changed your life? Can you share a story about that?
Certainly, there were two significant book influences in my life. Firstly, Rosa Parks’ “My Story” displayed a courageous stance for equality that deeply resonated with me, igniting a sense of inspiration and determination to advocate for unity and fairness from a young age. Secondly, “The Coldest Winter Ever” by Sister Souljah left a lasting impression, as the protagonist’s determination of the main character’s drive mirrored aspects of my own journey. But Sister Souljah’s impactful presence in her community served as a powerful reminder of the potential for positive change through passion and commitment. These experiences instilled within me a belief in the transformative power of personal conviction and community engagement.
It has been said that our mistakes can be our greatest teachers. Can you share a story about the funniest mistake you made when you were first starting? Can you tell us what lesson you learned from that?
One of the most amusing errors I’ve made was believing that merely reciting affirmations while standing in front of a mirror would spontaneously bring about healing. I’ve come to realize that affirmations, devoid of genuine belief, resemble having faith without undertaking the necessary effort — ultimately, ineffectual.
Can you describe how you aim to make a significant social impact with your book?
I am committed to leveraging my book to drive social change by advocating for individuals to embrace their truths and share their experiences, recognizing the enduring impact of trauma while emphasizing the importance of healing to achieve holistic well-being — physically, emotionally, mentally, socially, and spiritually. My overarching goal is to offer my testimony as a source of support and guidance, facilitating the journey toward healing and empowerment for others.
Can you share with us the most interesting story that you shared in your book?
One of the compelling narratives featured in my book centers around the experience of enduring domestic violence.
What was the “aha moment” or series of events that made you decide to bring your message to the greater world? Can you share a story about that?
The pivotal moment that catalyzed my decision to break my silence occurred with the loss of my brother, prompting a profound realization of life’s brevity and the imperative to shed unhappiness, unhealthiness, and emotional burdens. Recognizing the therapeutic potential of writing, I embarked on a year-long journey of introspection and healing before summoning the courage to release my book. It was encounters with other women still ensnared by their traumas that reinforced my resolve to share my story, offering a beacon of courage for those within my community grappling with similar struggles.
Without sharing specific names, can you tell us a story about a particular individual who was impacted or helped by your cause?
Numerous individuals have expressed how my narrative has resonated with them, yet one woman’s experience stands out profoundly: after reading my book, she found the strength to extricate herself and her child from an abusive relationship. This poignant outcome underscores the profound impact of sharing my story and reaffirms the significance of publishing it, knowing that it has empowered and positively influenced others’ lives.
Are there three things the community/society/politicians can do to help you address the root of the problem you are trying to solve?
To effectively address the underlying need for healing on a global scale, it is imperative for policymakers, communities, and society to undertake several key initiatives. Firstly, there should be increased transparency and promotion of ethical practices that facilitate healing and promote positive outcomes. Secondly, efforts should be made to enhance the accessibility and affordability of therapy, particularly for working-class and impoverished communities. Lastly, there is a crucial need to foster support systems that encourage family cohesion and aid keep families intact, rather than resorting to separation. These measures collectively contribute to fostering a more supportive and conducive environment for healing and well-being.
How do you define “Leadership”? Can you explain what you mean or give an example?
In my view, leadership is epitomized by leading through personal example, championing the principles of teamwork and solidarity. True leadership transcends mere authority; it entails the ability to inspire and effect positive change for the betterment of all involved.
What are your “5 things I wish someone told me when I first started” and why? Please share a story or example for each.
There are five insights I wish I had received earlier: firstly, the importance of granting oneself grace during the healing process; secondly, the recognition that acknowledging and embracing one’s emotions can significantly alleviate the burden of healing.
Third, the process of healing is an ongoing journey that unfolds over time, rather than a destination with a definitive endpoint. Fourth, Embrace and take ownership of your truths, as they serve as the foundation for genuine self-awareness and growth and Lastly, Model the principles of the Serenity Prayer, cultivating the wisdom to accept what cannot be changed, the courage to change what can, and the discernment to know the difference.
Can you please give us your favorite “Life Lesson Quote”? Can you share how that was relevant to you in your life?
Transform adversity into empowerment!
My life was full of adversity I harnessed my strength and gained resilience by overcoming challenges and not allowing them to overcome me.
Is there a person in the world, or in the US with whom you would like to have a private breakfast or lunch with, and why? He or she might just see this, especially if we tag them. 🙂
I am interested in meeting Iyanla Vanzant due to her notable dedication to the art of healing. Her strength, courage, and unwavering confidence in her healing methodologies are admirable qualities. Moreover, I sense a spiritual affinity with her.
